Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan to protect saiga antelopes

Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan have agreed to protect and increase the population of the critically endangered saiga antelopes whose largest remaining habitat straddles the two countries.

Uzbek President Islam Karimov approved an intergovernmental agreement with neighboring Kazakhstan to help protect, sustain and increase the number of antelopes, according to the Washington-based Central Asia Newswire website, CAN.

Plastics such as bags and water bottles take years to decompose in a landfill. Besides that, their use creates an ongoing dependency on oil which at best, is problematic – and at worst is a complete disaster.

Although it’s not currently practical to eliminate them completely, let’s examine a few ways we can, as individuals, cut back in our use of plastic products and packaging. Some of these tips are simple common sense but depending on where you live, there’s more or less awareness of this issue.

Transportation, oil’s greatest co-conspirator, needs an overhaul. Widespread adoption of electric vehicles can get us to gas-free transportation, but not without the help of smart systems built by IT companies. It has been estimated that petroleum use in the U.S. alone could be reduced by roughly one-third, from 20 million to 13 million barrels a day if half of the country’s cars and trucks go electric in the next 20 years.
